Statens Serum Institut (SSI) – Denmark
Statens Serum Institut is the main reference laboratory for diagnosis of infectious diseases in Denmark. It is a governmental research institute representing one of the major players regarding research in infectious diseases in this country. The department for Microbiological Surveillance and Research is involved in research in antibiotic resistance issues, use of antibiotics, urinary tract infections in a broad sense: Bacteriological identification and typing, susceptibility testing, demonstration of virulence factors, kit development, experimental animal models of urinary tract infection etc. The Institute has several WHOreference centres, one being the E. coli reference centre with specific competences in serotyping of E. coli as well as detection of relevant virulence factors. The institute has carried out animal experimental studies for more than 100 years and has a large modern animal experimental facility served by three veterinary doctors and 10 dedicated technicians.

Main tasks
Statens Serum Institut with Niels FrimodtMøller in the leading role will participate with experimental studies in a well established experimental urinary tract infection model in mice. This includes studies of pharmacokinetics in the same mice to establish the basis for studies of the effect with designed dosing regimens enabling the evaluation of the most important pharmacokinetic parameters related to effect, the socalled pharmacokineticpharmacodynamic(PKPD) relationship for the antibiotics in question, nitrofurantoin and fosfomycin.

Previous experience
Niels FrimodtMøller (NFM), has a long time scientific interest in urinary tract infections (UTI), i.e. he has supervised 4 PhD´s and published over 40 peer reviewed papers on the subject of UTI, as well as more than 30 sscientific papers on PKPD relationships in various types of infections, and the Dept. has two ongoing PhD projects regarding UTI as well. The Dept. has modern laboratory facilities for running bacteriological identification, susceptibility testing including determination of MIC by broth – or agar dilution and measurement of antibiotic concentrations in fluids (blood, urine and others). In addition, there is a highly specialised molecular biological laboratory with facilities for PCR, pulse field electrophoresis and other DNA typing methods, DNA sequencing and others. The Dept. also has access to the modern animal house facilities at the Institute, and runs experimental animal models including the mouse UTI model. The department has an animal experimental group consisting of one biologist and three laboratory technicians specifically educated in handling small animals for experimental animal studies. Further, the department has expertise in mathematical modelling within the PKPDfield apart from NFM with Klaus Skovbo Jensen, civil engineer, who has developed several programs for this specific use (PK-SIM and others, www.ssi.dk).
